Sustainability at Glatz

Sustainability is not a trend for us, but a binding component of our corporate strategy. As a Swiss family company, we think in generations – and therefore act responsibly towards the environment, employees and customers.

Responsibility at the Frauenfeld site

In October 2024, we moved into our new headquarters in Frauenfeld, Switzerland. The new building was designed with the intention of having a minimal ecological footprint, with measures including a photovoltaic system that significantly contributes to our energy requirements (53% autonomy) by generating 435,000 kWh per year with 1,000 solar panels across 2,100 m2 and a modern building management system that efficiently controls heating and cooling. The building is fitted with high-quality insulation, which increases energy efficiency in both summer and winter. This system, supported by the utilisation of groundwater for heating purposes, is a manifestation of Glatz’s vision of environmentally conscious production. Everything is now under one roof. This saves transport routes and thus emissions and time.

“Our sustainable measures show how serious we are about reducing our environmental impact while also creating long-lasting products that are both functional and environmentally friendly”, emphasises Markus Glatz. This awareness shapes our actions – from development to production to after-sales service.

Quality and durability

Years of enjoyment with your Glatz parasol. The most sustainable parasol is the one that can be reliably used for many years. That is why we consistently rely on quality and durability in various areas.

Robustness, durability and repairability are already taken into account during the design. Materials and parasols undergo extensive testing, such as wind stability tests in a wind tunnel.

Our parasol frames are made from aluminium and Swiss ash wood. Aluminium is weather-resistant, long-lasting, recyclable and easy to clean. Fibreglass reinforced plastic parts also ensure a high level of stability and durability even in a corrosive environment.

All materials used comply with the highest quality standards for outdoor areas. This is how we ensure that our products last.

To ensure our parasols bring lasting joy, we select our fabrics according to strict criteria. It’s not just the colour and first impressions that matter. Our fabrics in fabric quality 5, 4 and 2 meet all requirements, including lightfastness, robustness and UV protection. As of 2026, we only source PFAS-free textiles.

Light soiling can usually be easily removed with a sponge and clean water. To ensure your parasol lasts for many years,, it should always be properly tied when not in use and ideally covered with an original protective cover. During the winter months, the parasol should be stored dry and safe from damage, for example in a cellar or garage. It is particularly important that the parasol is completely dry before it is packed into the cover in order to avoid mould formation.

Protective covers are exposed to weather conditions all year round and provide reliable protection against rain, hail and UV rays. Depending on the intensity of sunlight, duration of use and climatic conditions, they should be replaced regularly. Appropriate winter storage also helps to significantly extend both the lifespan of the parasol and that of the protective cover.

Repair rather than replace

For us, sustainability also means maintaining products instead of replacing them.

  • Our sales partners receive annual training in Frauenfeld so that they can carry out repairs professionally.

  • Even if a model is discontinued from the range, we provide accessories and spare parts for up to 10 years.

  • Defective parasols can be repaired by our partners – a crucial contribution to resource conservation and waste prevention.

  • The canopies of our parasols are replaceable – so a damaged or heavily used canopy can be swapped for a new one.

  • When cutting the canopies, we pay attention to minimal waste: leftovers are sewn into bags, which are given to our distribution partners during training sessions along with the training materials.

This is how we guarantee professional after-sales service and extend the service life of our products.

Sustainability as our guiding principle

For us, sustainability means:

  • Energy-efficient infrastructure

  • Resource-efficient choice of materials

  • Repairability and spare parts availability

  • Long-lasting designs

  • Responsible production

With this holistic approach, we combine Swiss quality, functional innovation and environmental responsibility – for parasols that not only provide shade but also send a clear signal for sustainable thinking.
