Jim & Denny's - Hamburger ClassiqueA tribute to the world's greatest lunch counter |
Do you like a good burger? Here is the place for the real thing.
Jim and Denny's Lunch #2 has been flipping them for sixty years, and is beyond an institution; it's simply
the greatest diner in the known universe!
Perhaps you've visited one of the new retro-diners that have been springing up like unwanted toadstools the last few years. Rest assured, this is the genuine article. You won't see blackened redfish or other trendy fare. Forget about your "double latte" here, this is the mecca of the old-fashioned kind of coffee the Navy uses to remove tough barnacles from battleships (this is meant as a compliment!). A well-worn counter with a dozen stools, in clear view of the grill (to ensure no funny business is going on). There are also a few tables outside to enjoy the beautiful Sacramento weather, but I prefer being inside, to enjoy the thrill of being surrounded by eager customers savoring their culinary prizes. Te old neighborhood has changed a bit over the years - long gone is the view of the Chez Paree taxi dance hall and rent by-the-hour hotel, but you can see the trolley cars whiz by. The pinball machine has been replaced by a mini counter. And there is now outdoor seating on sunny days. |
Getting ThereJim-Denny's (as it is known affectionately by its loyal customers) is located at 816 12th street in Sacramento, California (to have your order waiting, call ahead at 916/443-9655, or send 'em a fax at 916/444-7345). Business hours are Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 3 PM (oh, what I'd do for an extended schedule!). |
That's all for now - gotta go grab a burger. Please address any corrections,
comments, or your favorite Jim & Denny's lore to
